Personal Consultations and Photography Classes

Personal Consultations and Photo Classes. Every camera purchase at Mike’s Camera includes, as part of the Mike's Camera Perfect Picture Pak, a FREE 30-minute, personal consultation with your sales consultant on the specific use of your camera. Additionally, with every camera purchase, we give you two FREE tickets for our scheduled Photo Classes. Feel free to attend two separate classes, or bring your spouse, child or a friend to attend the same one with you! Classes are held at each Mike's Camera store location, and are offered throughout the year. Each class addresses a core student level’s needs. Classes run for approximately two hours during the course of one weekday evening or Saturday morning, and are generally limited to 20 participants. If you don’t already have a class ticket, the cost of each class is $55 per person. Complimentary class tickets can be redeemed for any of our Photo Classes, but not the Photographic Workshops.

Things to bring to class. Be sure to bring the following items to class with you: your camera (with a fully charged battery), a clean memory card (so none of your important images get accidentally erased), paper and pen to take notes, your camera manual, and your FREE Perfect Picture Pak or prepaid class coupon, or payment. We want to make sure you make the most of your class, and are ready to enjoy the world’s greatest hobby!

Photo Class Outlines

  • Personal Consultation. Please contact your sales consultant directly to set up a mutually convenient time. We invite you to bring some of your images (in digital or, preferably, print form), so we can review your use of the camera features and comfort level with the various operating modes. This also helps us best advise you on improving your lighting, exposure and composition. During the consultation, we address your planned use of the camera and shooting style to assist you in getting the best results possible.
  • Compact Digital Camera. This class will cover the basic operation of your compact digital camera to assist you in getting the best results with your photography. You will also learn basic camera features, flash and exposure control, downloading, uploading to the Internet, sharing images, and common accessories. The class also has a section on our FREE online image storage and sharing service, ordering prints online, and other possible uses for your images.
  • Basic Digital SLR. In this class, you will become familiar with your camera and gain an understanding of its basic features, functions and modes. You will also learn about composition; exposure control; program, shutter- and aperture-priority modes; depth of field; and accessories that can help you maximize the use of your camera. The class also has a section on our FREE online image storage and sharing service, ordering prints online, and other possible uses for your images.
  • Advanced Digital SLR. This class will take you to the next level with you digital SLR camera. In this class, you will become familiar with the various qualities of lenses available, as well as review exposure theory. You will also learn about metering techniques, white balance and flash photography. The class also has a section on our FREE online image storage and sharing service, ordering prints online, and other possible uses for your images.
  • Camera- and Brand-Specific Classes. Camera- and brand-specific classes cover the camera-specific menus and operation only. There is very little covered about photographic technique in these, so, depending on your level of proficiency in photography, we strongly suggest complementing them with the Basic or Advanced Digital SLR classes. Using a new digital SLR camera isn’t hard – but it can initially be overwhelming. We understand that most people don’t have the time to go through owners’ manuals in detail, so we have designed these classes to jump-start photographers new to advanced digital SLR cameras. These classes will have you pushing a lot of buttons to help relieve any intimidation. The class also has a section on our FREE online image storage and sharing service, ordering prints online, and other possible uses for your images.
  • Video: This class will get you comfortable with the operation of your digital camcorder, and cover basic camera features, functions, basic composition, connecting your camcorder to other devices, and common accessories available. Our video classes are generally kept smaller, and allow for more question and answer time for personalized instruction. We conclude the class with a section on what to do with your video and still images now that you have taken them.
  • Portraiture. Lighting techniques, use of flash and natural lighting, use of digital SLR and medium format cameras, lenses, depth of field, and posing techniques.
  • Nature Photography. Techniques to improve your landscape and wildlife photography, exposure techniques, use of telephoto and wide-angle lenses, best times of day to photograph.
  • Flash and Lighting. Learn different techniques to improve the lighting in your pictures. From soft to dramatic, single and multi-point sources of light can accomplish different objectives in photography.
  • Macro Photography. Learn to experience the joys and venefits of Macro or Close-Up digital SLR photography. This class covers a variety of different subjects to photograph with Macro or Close-Up lenses, outdoors or in a studio setting, as well as lighting and accessories to enhance  your Macro photographs.
  • Astronomy. Designs of telescopes, telescope mounts, clock motor drives, astrophotography, visual accessories, star charts, eyepieces, filters and meteorites. Weather permitting, there is viewing through telescopes after class.
